tires.tires.tires

We trekked upstate on Friday to pick up over 100 free tires! It was quite the adventure-- driving a 14 foot box truck an hour and a half in the rain. We kept getting hollered at on the way out of the city... I guess people aren't used to lady truck drivers.

Hill construction on design.plot begins next weekend! We're going to use to tires for the foundation of our mini mountain! Stay tuned for more process photos and possibly a stop motion!

metal fences are just boring

We are giving design.plot's fence a cozy face lift! We felt like its about time this industrial street got some well needed color and charm and the garden couldn't have just any plain ol' fence cover. These fabric scraps have been moving around with us for a bit now. Some had previous lives as bedsheets others made up a tipi cover. We love using materials with a history and story. We can see a little scrap and remember where we found it and are constantly wondering what life it had before we became friends. There is quite the task ahead of us but we can't wait to see the fence all loved on!

song of the builders

Song of the Builders by Mary Oliver

On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God -
a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside
this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope
it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.

Last Saturday we set up a little booth at Smorgasburg to pass out free seeds and information about design.plot. Our lead farmer Heather was in town from CT and spent the day chatting with us! Thanks to everyone who came by! Look for us at the Williamsburg farmers market this Saturday. Stop by and say hello!

My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird—
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,
which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,
